Quotes: Graham Alexander 3rd March 2006

I’ve been out for a few weeks injured and I am looking forward to getting back playing, we have got some tough games coming up with a bit of travelling but we are used to it at Preston because we do have quite a few long journeys from up here.

The mood in the dressing room is really good because we have played quite well, even though we have been beat. Obviously we could have prevented a couple of the goals but our overall play has been quite good, the atmosphere is good and the confidence is still up there, we know we are a decent team and we know we can beat most sides when we play well.

There’s a couple of little things we could have done a little bit better at either end of the pitch but overall the possession we had and the way we played and the chances we created were decent so if we can keep that up we will win more than we lose.

I didn’t think they were as good as I thought they would be. They are doing really well and they are at the top of the league because they deserve to be there but I think we played really, especially in the second half, I think we bossed the game and they struggled a little bit and were hanging on towards the end. But they are a decent team, you can’t say that if they are that far ahead that they don’t deserve to be because they have won a lot of games.

I probably wouldn’t expect a similar result scorewise, I know that we can win the game but 4-0 would be a big ask because Ipswich are a decent side. We played them at the start of the season when they weren’t on their best form and we caught them at a good time but they are a decent side and a big club. I think it will be a hard game, a real tough game but I am sure we can get the three points.

It seems to be all defenders, we have got suspensions in the same part of the team, sometimes when you get them spread out of the team you can cover but we do seem to be short of defenders this weekend so it is going to be a tough game and we are going to have to adapt and somebody is going to have to play out of position on Saturday but I don’t see that being a problem because we have got enough good players in this squad to cover.

It’s a little bit of both really, he’s a decent player, he can really take people on on his day and he can score a lot of goals and I was looking forward to him playing against Claude Davis, his big friend, it would have been a good old battle and it would have been interesting to see. For us we would rather him not play because he is a decent player, even though we are not frightened of him or anything, he is one of their better players so it is better for us that he is not playing.

I wouldn’t see that happening to be fair, I’ve played all over the park this season but I don’t think centre-half would be one of them options. If I was asked to do it I would do it but I don’t think the gaffer would be looking along them lines.

The second half of last season we did really well and it did seem to happen from halfway through but this season we have started our run a little bit earlier and we are in a lot better position this year than we were last year and I think the squad is a lot stronger. The team is quite similar in strength but the squad size is a lot deeper and the quality throughout is better, we have probably got 18 or 19 players playing for the positions.

A couple of us had played in the last one against Bolton but for most of the lads it was a new experience and I think that you do learn from your experiences. As a footballer the more big games you play the better you handle the next one, I think if we get there this year what we went through last year will stand us in good stead.

The teams just outside the Play-Offs are probably looking at our position and trying to take it off us. We are in sixth place at the minute and there are a couple of teams, Wolves are coming strong, Cardiff are hanging in there and they could pick up some good results. Out of the teams below us I could see Wolves maybe going on a good run towards the end and getting there but we are not really looking at what other teams are doing, we know what we need to do, we know how many points we need to get to get into the Play-Offs.

We know roughly what it takes to get into the Play-Offs, what sort of point mark it is and we just want to get to that mark as soon as we can, we don’t want to leave it over the next 12 games, we want to get it as soon as we can, we are going out for wins every week.

The one thing I have learnt from Play-Off experience is that it doesn’t matter who you play, I think I’ve finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the Play-Offs and been beaten every year. Anyone can beat anyone, it’s like a Cup competition once you get there, we don’t fear anyone and whoever you get you need to beat them so there’s no worries on that front.

The target after what we did last season was to get to the Play-Offs, we didn’t start off too well this season but the target was still to get in there and now that we are in there we want to stay in there. If we did drop out of it and finished seventh or below it would be a massive disappointment for the whole team.

Wigan and West Ham have shown that if you have got a positive attitude towards it then you can achieve what you want. They have gone up there and they haven’t shown any fear and I think that is the major thing, teams have gone up with good players before and maybe not attacked it as much as they should have and they have come back down. Wigan and West Ham have both been positive teams and really gone for it and they have won some games which will keep them in the Premier League next year by a good margin. If we achieve the goal of getting in the Premier League you have obviously got to add a bit of quality to your squad but we hope we could do the same as them two clubs.

Quotes: Billy Davies 16th February 2006

It all came from our mistakes, it all came from our possession and I said that to them at half-time, we were our own worst enemy. We were very careless in the first half, we never moved the ball about, we never created enough chances and it was a disappointing first half. Second half was much much better, I thought we had some wonderful individual performances, particularly the goalkeeper and the two centre-halves, I thought they were top class. It’s a great point, a wonderful point and it keeps the run going, that’s 25 without defeat and we are very proud of that record.

He missed more than one chance, he had three wonderful chances, not just him but one or two others. We had some good opportunities second half, the one he has put over the bar from a tremendous free-kick in the first half was a bad miss, but he is there, he is a young lad, I’ve said before that he has got development to do, he’s got learning to do and he has got to realise very quickly. But to be fair to him, I’ve said before that it will be next season before we see the best of him with this three and a half month illness that he had with impetigo. It’s taken an awful lot out of him but we will see the best of him once we get him a pre-season but he is a fantastic asset to us, there’s no doubt about it. Unfortunately on the day he never put the ball away.

Personally I think that this season, so far, is a much much greater achievement than last season. This season we have had to deal with the loss of Cresswell, Eddie Lewis and then Nugent with impetigo, 49 goals between the three of them. We then go and bring in David Jones from Manchester United and he goes to Holland, we bring in Adam Nowland from Forest  and he breaks his leg, we lose McKenna for seven weeks, we lost Brian O’Neil for six weeks and we make all these changes. Then we bring in young players from the lower leagues, David Hibbert, Simon Whaley, Brian Stock, all these players we have brought in and we are in a transition, there’s no doubt about it. In my opinion this is a much greater achievement because of what we have had to deal with, even if we don’t go up.

Brett works his socks off, you can never fault the lad’s attitude. He has just come into the club and his contribution so far has been excellent, I’ve taken two strikers off and put two on because I have tried to freshen it up and try and change the game. It is always difficult coming back to your old club, especially one that he had such wonderful times for and great feelings for. It is a tremendous football club, you can see that just by looking at it. We are delighted to have Brett and delighted that he is with us and I am sure that he will contribute.

I don’t think it is a big one, I think it is a tremendous challenge for the players, it’s a tremendous challenge for the staff. We are the underdogs without a doubt, when you look at their squad and the team that they have and it will be a very difficult match. But we have got nothing to lose, we will go out there and enjoy the game, we will have a right go, do the best that we can and hopefully get the little breaks that you need in Cup football to go on to get into the next round.

I just felt that away from home it was important that we had his devilment, he’s a great battler and he has got a tremendous left foot and his performances before he got injured were excellent. It was a little bit of a risk but I certainly felt that it was necessary with regards to the team that we were playing against and obviously with us being away from home I thought it was vital.

1888, it’s 22 in one season. We are also now 25 undefeated but we now have 22 in the one league season. We are very proud of that record in the club’s 125 year history, to go and match that it is a very proud day for everyone connected with this football club as far as I am concerned.

Quotes: Billy Davies 9th February 2006

It’s not so much payback but we were very disappointed with our performance at Luton, we underachieved, underperformed and we did ourselves no justice whatsoever. It is very important this weekend that we come out and we do ourselves justice, that we perform the way that we can and hopefully that will be good enough to pick up three points.

Confidence has been high from day one, through the draws and the bits and pieces like that confidence has never been a problem. We’ve got a bunch of players working very hard, on a good run and it’s important that we try and keep the run moving along. There are no easy games and this is a difficult match once again, they are a good side that have done very well this season so we have just got to make sure from our end that we go and we achieve and we perform and we keep it moving along.

Not just up front but in centre of defence as well, we have got Claude Davis coming back, in the centre of the park we have got Stocky coming back and Simon Whaley so there are great options all over the pitch which is very important. The only disappointment that we have is that Callum Davidson and Graham Alexander who are both struggling, Callum with a thigh strain and Graham with this hamstring problem. I’ve also decided to let young Joe Anyinsah out on loan for the month to try and get him 90 minutes of football for the latter part of the season when he comes back.

We are still touch and go, we don’t know, at the moment he is looking very doubtful. We will give him up until the last minute until we get a decision.

It has been going on for a couple of months, the situation is clear, Nuge’ has joined this club and has done brilliantly since he came in, he was very unfortunate at the start of the season to be missing for such a long period with the illness, he has now fought himself back but I don’t think he will be back to his best until he gets a pre-season under his belt. It’s great to have him in the squad and thoroughly deserves the rewards for what he has achieved because of the way he has gone about it and what he was contributed so it is a nice little reward for him.

We have done that over the past couple of weeks, we have talked to Callum Davidson and Claude Davis, there wasn’t just interest in Nugent there was interest from many other clubs for many other players. We have been speaking about the Nugent thing for a number of months and it is not time to sit down and reward the lad for what he has done since he came to the club.

Hopefully we can get it done this afternoon, the intention is there, we are very keen to do it, we recognise that the contribution that he has made has been very good and he has certainly made great progress since he has been here. We just feel it is necessary and it something that he deserves

Quotes: Billy Davies On FA Cup Draw

It’s good that we are still in the hat. That’s the most important thing, we have got an important hurdle to jump away at Palace and of course there will be disappointment from everybody with regards not getting a big Premier Division. Coventry will be feeling the same but Middlesbrough is a tough game whatever happens. The only thing you want to try and do is get through to the next round and then you have got a chance to fight on, so we are pleased to be there.

It is business as usual, we have got a game to prepare for which is very important, it’s an extremely important three points.

The one message I want to put out is that I feel our fans can play a key part tonight. We would ask them to come out in their numbers and we would ask them to become very vocal because they can be a great help to us, especially in games like this where we need to go and put as much pressure on the opposition as we can. From a playing point of view we will obviously go and work as hard as we can to get the three points.

We will certainly be freshening up, we have got a lot of very good players coming back. Matty Hill is also included, Matty has come through training which is good and he is back in along with the two cup-tied lads, we also  have McKenna and Nugent back who were suspended. It’s looking nice and healthy.

We know that they have got good players and an excellent strikeforce as we saw on Saturday when they had Jon Macken on the bench. That was my on concern when I looked at our bench and I saw young Warren Beattie and Ashley Parillon and young David Hibbert starting his first game, although we are bringing players back it certainly won’t make the game any easier because we are going to have to work very hard to go and win three points. It is nice to have the depth of squad that we have for this game.

They have also got one or two changes that we can make with people like McAnuff, Ward, Macken and Hughes coming on to the park and they have also got a huge depth of squad and they can make many changes. Likewise we are just delighted that we can bring in a couple of fresh faces and some fresh legs.

The plan that we have got is to see how they can handle David Nugent. I think it is all about us, we know that they have got good players, many other clubs have, our target is to get three points to keep the good run going and make it 21 games without defeat. It will be very important if we can do that and push ourselves above Palace, it’s there for both teams with the position that we are in. It is all about getting our best players playing to their full potential and if we can do that then we know that we can cause a lot of problems.

It is just another game, it is preparing for a game of football with the personnel that we have got. Inbetween the two Palace games there is a very important away league match at Stoke that we have got to concentrate on.

At the end of the day, let’s not be kidded, it was a wonderful wonderful free-kick. It has actually worked three times. David Kelly was the first one to score for Motherwell Football club against Aberdeen at Pittodrie when I took him up to Scotland and he scored with the free-kick. Richard Cresswell was the second and now without a doubt the best finish was David Nugent. When it works it is nice but especially in a derby match, we work very hard at set-pieces as everybody knows and we will try and pull out one or two more before the end of the season. The one against Burnley was particularly pleasing because it is the quality of the keep-up from Graham Alexander and then the weight of pass over the wall but it is the sublime finish from David Nugent, to show that technique with the ball coming over the wall is a delight. I’m sure if that was Barcelona they would be showing that on many videos but with little Preston North End it may not be as such.

Quotes: Billy Davies On Victory

It was a very good performance, an excellent result. We knew it would be tough and we knew that it would be a difficult match and very competitive which it turned out to be but I thought we thoroughly deserved the three points. It was an excellent team performance as well as many very good individual performances.

That’s what he is capable of, he leads by example and you can see that with his workrate and i thought that he struck up a very good partnership with David Nugent. We now have in my opinion five excellent strikers including young David Hibbert who was unfortunate to be left out tonight. We have now got that group of players to contribute greatly between now and the end of the season, I thought Brett was first class.

Believe it or not he has not even had a training session because of the weather we have had in the last couple of days we have not had to do the training we would like. He came in and we had one or two laughs and he got to meet the boys, he has settled in very quickly with a great bunch of lads and you can see that with the attitude he had tonight. We were playing against a club with huge resources, you look at their bench and the people they are bringing on and for us to compete it is very very proud for us to go out there and compete the way that we did and to get the three points is a tremendous bonus for us. We are one away from avoiding relegation which is good and that was  the important thing.

The second goal was straight from the training ground again, it was a wonderful corner kick with great movement and great runs with people that we have asked to go and do what they have done. It was a great great goal and we are very proud and pleased again and thankfully they listened for a change which was nice.

There may be some loan situations that we will look at, I think we can still do that after the next seven days or so. We would still like to try and introduce one or two if possible, it will be difficult but we certainly try and get some kind of loan in, if we don’t then we are very well equipped as long as we keep everybody free of suspension and free of injury.

This lad has come back from a terrible run of injuries and I have said to the board and the people at the club that the lad just needed time to come in and play and as far as I am concerned if this lad doesn’t go international in the next couple of years then there is something far wrong because again his performance today was first class. I think it was in the 88th minute, he has opened his legs and you can see the pace and the energy and the enthusiasm, he has been excellent.

He can play right-back, centre-back, he can play outside-right, outside-left, centre forward and I think his best position is right-back, but he can play anywhere, he has got great attributes.

I think he is Scottish actually.

Unfortunately we have been denied requests of trying to do something and that is unfortunate. We will have to look at it again and hopefully try and bring one or two more in, we know that there are one or two gaps and we would like to strengthen one or two areas so it’s something we will look at. I think we will have to look at one or two of our own players going out on loan for a bit of experience which we will do for the next seven days.

It’s just a reluctance to go and let good players go and the ones we ask about we just can’t quite get there. We have certainly tried but unfortunately the door keeps getting closed, especially in Scotland.

QUOTES: BILLY DAVIES ON PNE’S 2005

The first 45 we played some great stuff and should have been more in front unfortunately we hit the post and whatever else we have done. But it was a tremendous first 45, a tremendous performance from the players and an excellent three points.

That was the biggest fear at half-time, we couldn’t take the foot off the pedal but we have certainly done that in the second half I feel. We stopped working as hard as we were doing in the first half, we became a little bit slack and we lost a soft goal. It was disappointing to lose the goal but it is expected over a long 90 minutes that something like that is going to happen. It is great credit to the players again, after the long journey from Plymouth and then coming back and finding it difficult to train in the last couple of days, it has been an excellent performance and somebody was telling me that that is seven defeats in 47 matches so we are on a good run and we have got to keep it going.

We are delighted obviously, we are delighted with the goalscorers, tremendous goals, Adam Nowland, Sedge and Grezza I’m pleased for them. They really worked hard today.

Sadly we are losing young David Jones who is going to Holland, he’s joining NEC Nijmegen. We’d like to thank Manchester United for giving us David, we’d like to thank David for all his tremendous efforts and we’d like to wish him all the very best for the future.

It’s until the end of the season. I got the information a couple of days ago when David informed me that both himself and United think that for his development, a spell in Holland will be good for his education. It’s another blow because we have had a lot of transition this season, but in 2005 to have seven defeats in 47 matches, through the transition that we have had to come through, with the chopping and changing of players, illnesses and injuries, young players coming in, it has been very difficult. Now we have got to start again and we have still got gaps to fill, I’ll sit down with the Chairman and hopefully find out if we can bring in a few bodies which I think we need.

His patter is unfortunately not as good as Eddie Lewis’ but he has certainly got a lovely left-foot, he’s only a young player, a young player that is still developing and you can see that with his strength and other parts of his game. But he’s certainly a talent and we just have to be patient with the likes of David Hibbert, Joe Anyinsah and Lewis Neal and Tyrone Mears coming back into it, Patrick Agyemang and David Nugent, when you look at the side it is a very young side, patience is the key and we will try and develop them as best we can.

His last few games have been first class, I’ve said to him today that he has been unlucky. I don’t think we will see the best of David Nugent until he gets a pre-season, I think the three month illness really set him back a long way. He’s now coming back to his best and getting better but I really don’t think that he will get the benefit until he gets a pre-season under his belt and then kicks on from there. He thoroughly deserved a goal, his workrate is excellent, his play, his quality and roll on the 31st of January.

Without a doubt, we lost Brian O’Neil today, he’s pulled a groin and he’s out for probably two to three weeks. So at this moment in time, it looks as if Dickson Etuhu is going to Norwich on a permanent, so we are very short in that midfield area. There are one or two headaches but we will look at the market over the next month and the intention is to try and hold on to everybody and then bring in three or four new faces.

It depends what’s available, we don’t know what’s available, with regards to cash or loans or whatever it might be. I don’t know we have to sit down with the Chairman and find out what we do have, once we find that out then we can try and take it forward with regards the options that we have and the type of money that we have got.

Nothing’s changed since the start of the season. We are only human, we are going to have days off, one or two off days where we are not quite at it. But we have done nothing different but the response from the players at the end of 2005 was first class

Quotes: Billy Davies On Steve Jones Rumours

It’s like everything else, there’s lots of speculation but we don’t want to go talking about possible enquiries that we have made and possible targets. We have made several enquries, we have made phonecalls to certain people, we certainly know about Jones at Crewe and about other strikers, for example Jansen at Blackburn and different people like that. We have been making lots of phonecalls but with regards to the speculation there is nothing that has took place and there is nothing in it as far as I am concerned with regards to this player coming to us, it is more or less enquiries that have been made and he is a player, there is no doubt about it, that we do admire and that we like.

It would be nice to announce it when things are done, what we can’t do is talk about the speculation in the papers with either players coming to the club or players leaving the club because it has been happening an awful lot since the start of the season and it gets to a point where we have got to really move on and say that until something is official and something is done then we can make an announcement. As yet all we can turn round and tell the fans is that we have been making lots of enquiries and with regards to our own players leaving the club, if anybody is leaving the club the information will come from us first and from us only.

Quotes: Davies Signs New PNE Deal 17th July 2005

Well it was important obviously to make sure the right situations and the right facts were there, I knew the situation obviously and I knew what was going on but the most important thing was to sit down and take my time and really looking at all the positives and the negatives of all the things that were there so I really think the most important thing is that I am very happy at Preston North End and always have been. There’s some wonderful people at this football club there’s no doubt about it, the fans have been excellent the board have been first class, the payers and everybody else so that was a major influence as to why I decided to stay.

Well not at all I think the small section of the fans need to understand that these are the games that are played in the press and the one thing we don’t do is we don’t believe everything we read because we know they situation. The facts are that we know exactly what is going on in the football club and the reason why we’ve had such success is because of the team effort and the team spirit within the club all the way from the cleaner to the chairman we have that great togetherness so that’s the one thing we have here and one thing we are now looking forward to carrying on next season.

Well I think that’s vital there’s no doubt about it he is my right arm as they say that’s a fact and I’m delighted and also very happy that Ned is also, looking forward to next season and what we’re trying to achieve because we are a team and we’ve always been a team and hopefully for a long long time we’ll be a very good team.

Yeah of course that’s the situation and the one thing the chairman gave me was that he was wanting to take the club forward and we want to do the right things and that’s very very important we know we have to build on last season and that will be very difficult as we keep saying, but as we keep saying when you have that willingness to try and achieve from everyone in the club then it was obviously a major factor for Ned and I first of all to be here and delighted to be taking it forward.

Well contrary to the reports about fallouts and disagreements the facts are we’ve been doing this for along time we’re very happy here and there’s great relationships in the club and so on and as I said you can’t believe everything you read. The important thing is that we have started preparations we are already preparing and looking at one or two targets and one or two situations that may be able to take us forward and we’ll continue to do this before the start of the season.

Well it isn’t really its about realism and we know that last season we over-achieved there’s no doubt about it we know the size of the clubs we’ll be facing this season, I will be under illusion for next season, the first target is 53 points and then we can hopefully reset it from there, the most important thing as I said before is not to get too carried away it will be very hard next season without the surprise element. People will now start to sit up and take note because of what we’ve done last season so we’ve got to be prepared for that and look forward the challenge but it will be the same again, 53 points and hopefully from there we can go on and get a top half finish.

Quotes: Billy Davies 31st May 2005

It was a fantastic three or four days I can tell you the training facility was excellent, the time we spent on the training ground with the privacy and everything that we had and just the whole team getting together was a wonderful four days and it was great to get some sun on my back obviously. And it was also nice to hear that the rain was pouring down in Preston which made it even better.

Well I think it was, when we looked at the situation with regards to tickets and things, the fight for tickets it was going to be difficult, so rather than being down at our normal training ground I just thought it was a very good idea to take them away they’ve certainly earned it for sure there’s no doubt about it and I think as part of our preparation I think it was a good place to go especially with the type of training that we had.

Well I think we got about it in the same way to be honest with you but we know ourselves that we know find ourselves 90minutes away from premiership football and we’ve got there because we deserve to be there there’s no doubt about it.

We’ve proved already this year that we can match and beat a lot of big clubs in this division that will mean nothing with regards to going into this game, but at the same time too we’re there because we deserve to be there and we will now go into that game with confidence that we can go and hopefully go all the way.

Well I don’t think there’s any advantage in one off games I think obviously that West Ham without a shadow of a doubt are obviously the bigger club there a club that only recently have been playing Premiership football so we know the situation. Irrespective of whether it was Liverpool or a fourth division club or whoever we had to play against we respect all opponents we’ll respect West Ham we will certainly not fear them and we’ll certainly go into the game with confidence that we can hopefully on the day play the best we can play again there’s no doubt about it that we’ve been over achieving all season with regards to the changes we’ve made hopefully we can now can on and continue to do that.

I don’t they’ve got a main strength I think they’ve got they’ve got a group of very strong players and they’ve also got a very good squad there so we certainly won’t be focused on any one person or one player they’ve got very experienced players there no doubt about it. The most important thing is our preparation has got to be right to make sure that we’re doing exactly what we’re doing. I don’t think we should sit back and look at any individual players of West Ham. They have got good players there’s a lot of good guys through that team but at the same time too we’ve got good players and all we can do is encourage our players to hopefully do what they have to do on the day.

Not that I’m aware of definitely not I think that to be focused on Preston North End and be focused on getting our players to play to the best of their ability. We’ve been very evenly matched both teams are in the play off final because they deserve to be there because of the results that they’ve got as I told you before all season we’ve been resetting our targets as I said before. Our first target was 53points  and then we moved on to a top half finish we then moved on to a play-off place and now we find ourselves in the final and we’re now resetting our target again which is to go and win the game.

Well I think throughout the side we’ve got good strengths and depth in the squad we’ve got good experience in the right places. We’ve got players who have played in these type of games before, we’ve got good youth in there and guys who must be looking forward to the occasion and I think from back to front there’s a lot of different strengths in that team that could be very, very beneficial to us on the day.

Well Graham Alexander’s certainly on track to be part of the squad for the final, Callum’s still touch and go at the moment we’ll be racing against time with Callum but we’re still keeping our fingers crossed that we can get him there He’s working very hard with the medical people but that ones going to be tricky and I think we might just be against time on that one.

Sometimes needs must but you know sometimes and I said that to our squad prior to the Derby game that I always felt that Derby County would go and take chances if they needed to take chances we will be in the same situation if it’s a case of needs must then sometimes you have to do it but at this moment in time we’re looking very healthy with regards to the squad and what we’ve got.

We’ve Callum Davidson who’s racing against time and once we get closer to the final we will then look at the situation, look at his fitness and then make decisions from there.

No first time, no. Not with regards to the financial gains I mean obviously I think it’s one of the most important games it the country with regards to what’s at stake, but both clubs know what’s at stake and as I said before that to get there will be a wonderful achievement but you know it’s a game of football we’ve just got to go and approach it as a game of football. We know the importance of it as I said before we’re there and we’re there on merit and we’ve now got to go in there with the confidence and belief that we can go one step further and go all the way.

No I don’t think so I think that we’ve got good experience in the squad obviously we’re very excited and looking forward to the game.

It’s like everything else when you get to this type of games then it can be very exciting for everybody concerned. We’ve just got to go in there and enjoy it. My message to the players and to everyone at the club is enjoy the occasion because we’re delighted to be here and we’re looking forward to it very much and as I say there’s no other way you can approach it except going in there, doing what we have been doing all season, continue to play the game we have been playing and hopefully  on the day get those one or two breaks that you need as you saw last night with the  Liverpool game and even like the game up in Scotland the Rangers and Celtic things you need those little breaks that go for and against you when you get to these stages and that’s all we can hope for that on the day we get our players playing the way we can and we get one or two breaks to go and take us through.

I do think they can I think everything gets taken on it’s own merit I think the squad now look forward to the West Ham game and we’ve got players in there that can play international football we’ve got players who have played in these playoff games before so we have got good experience and we’ve also got one or two younger guys who are coming in and it will be their first experience. So I think as a team we’ll be together we’ve been together all season again we’ll go to Cardiff and we’ll be together again and irrespective of whether it’s the most senior guy or the youngest guy in the team we will go into this and we’ll make sure we’re very much together in everything we’re trying to achieve.

Plenty of advice from plenty of people spoke to a lot of guys I’m just ready to phone that former manager here that David Moyes guy and get some stick off him in the next couple of days. But I’ve spoke to many people as you can imagine and it’s always nice to hear their thoughts and get their views on the situation.

Just little things, just they’re past experiences travelling to the ground and once you get to the ground the situation and the preparation all these little different things that you deal with prior to a game like this and we’ve all got our own little opinions as far as I’m concerned I’ll listen to what the guys have got to say  I’m very, very happy to speak with them and very happy to seek advice but the most important thing is that you do what you do and I’ve got to go on continue to do what I’ve been doing and continue to believe in the things that I believe and the things that I’ve tried to put in place and that’s the most important thing. But there’s always room to I think listen to people and I’m certainly very keen on phoning people up and seeking advice.

Not really, there’s not been really too many things about not, I don’t think there’s any prescription to football or anything that you do I mean how can you possibly legislate for that last night its just football and that’s the game we’re in you never can tell, you can prepare properly and you can do all the right things, setup your team and do wonderful things but on the day you just need that little break to go and take you there and that’s what we’ll be trying to do. Our preparation has been excellent so far between now and the weekend we’ll prepare again the way we have been doing all those months  and we’ll  continue to do what we have been doing there’s not going to be a great deal of change I certainly believe I got the players to go and win the game and that will be my main focus which is to encourage these players to go and do what they can on the day play the way they can play on the day and you never know what can happen.

I’m not a great believer in it to be honest I think it’s an individual thing some people fell comfortable practicing penalties like  Graham Alexander practices penalty kicks everyday irrespective of who we play or the situation other guys like to stay away from it and I’ll very much leave it on their own shoulders to see how they feel I certainly won’t be putting any emphasis on them practicing their penalties, if they want to do it then fine on the day  it will be all about confidence, all about the players who feel confident and we’ll let them do their own thing.

No definitely not they’re already picked, yeah very much so. well I’ve picked it because I think I know who the calm heads are the ones with the courage who will stand up there .I’ll be encouraging all of them as it may be needed but at the same time I won’t be putting any pressure on them.

To put the ball in the back of the net and continue to do it throughout the 95 minute game. Enjoy it it’s a wonderful achievement for him and I think he’s bought about 196 tickets for the game so you can imagine what he’s like, he’s got a great following behind him and it’s a great experience for this young lad to go there, go and enjoy yourself hopefully it’ll be the first of many great things in his career. And the most important thing is play the way you normally play irrespective of your surroundings and what’s there, just go out and enjoy his game that’s what my message will be to him and everybody else. Not at all absolutely not, these are the games you want to play in, this is what footballs all about, this is where you want to go as a player, as a coach as a manager, you want to try and achieve as much as you possibly can and as I said we’re very proud to be in the final we’re very proud to be 90 minutes away from premiership football the most important thing now for the players is to enjoy the whole day, the whole occasion. Don’t stand and admire it and don’t stand and admire the surroundings. Go out and do the job and work as hard as I can and hopefully on the day we’ll do what we’re good at.

Yes, well I think it’s get away there and get the son on our back it was excellent weather as I said before it was an excellent facility and we thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent, particularly the late afternoon sessions that we’ve done about 4’o’clock I think that was obviously very beneficial to us it’s all about doing the things you think are right and I genuinely feel that it was a wonderful 4 days both from a working point of view but from a spirit and team bonding point of view.

Funny enough as soon as we both made the final Alan and I were on the phone to each other and we basically wished each other all the best and I know Granty very well, Peter Grant at West Ham so that’s football throughout the year you jump about like lunatics sometimes on that touchline but at the end of the day you know the situation the guys are trying to do the best they can to get the job done and we’re the same and sometimes you get a little bit hot headed on that touchline sometimes you can be passionate but we don’t bear grudges in this game we know the situation and we’ll shake each others hands after the game and we move on. As far as I’m concerned it’s a great occasion for both sets of teams and obviously both sets of fans.

It was actually a phone call and a fax that went opposite ways if you like. He sent a fax I made a call.

It’s already washed and ready to go again and it will not be coming off, Irrespective of how it’s come off it’ll be worn anyway it can have as many stains as you like on it, it wouldn’t matter. I’m not rubbing any Buddha’s I can tell you.

Quotes: Billy Davies 5th May 2005

A point would be nice but we have got to go and cement fourth place and forget about anything else. To try and get the second leg at home is very important for us, a point would be good but at the same time too we need to make sure we go there and cement fourth place.

I think they will look to win the game because they will see the second game as very important so I have no doubt that they will be looking to win the game just as we are.

We are the only club at the moment who are guaranteed a play-off place, everybody else is fighting for that play-off place and it is a great achievement for us to be there and to be able to sit back and know that we are guaranteed a place while other clubs may or may not be in there.

I’m thinking about that at the moment with regards to team selection. I have not made up my mind yet but one consideration is to give one or two guys a game or change the team about a bit. But at the same time too, not to upset anything, we want to go on and cement fourth place, that is very important.

I have said to the whole squad over a number of months now that every single member of the team becomes very important because he may be called upon in the semi-finals or the final or the last game of the season. It is very important that fitness is taken care of and condition is right, mentally they are right for the game. We have been discussing this for a long time and it is important because somewhere along the line we don’t know where that hero will come from who might just take us into the final or maybe beyond that and into the Premiership.

Every member of the staff is vital, when it gets to this stage you have got to go and beat whoever is there and it really doesn’t matter who we play against. The most important thing is that we are prepared and ready for it, we are confident and we will go in there and have a go and try and win the game. The most important thing for me is that everybody is ready in terms of fitness and conditioning, we will look forward to the games that come up whoever that may be.

Every game will have its own difficulties irrespective of what club it is. I don’t think there is any easy game when you get to this level, when you get to this stage of the season, for what’s at stake. We know that, we are prepared for that and I am sure other teams are prepared for that as well. But the most important thing is that we continue doing what we are doing and continue to show that work ethic that we showed and we will see what happens from there.

I’ve said to the players that these are the games that you look forward to and you go in and you enjoy them. They are great memories and that is what football is all about, holding on to these memories that you can sometimes never get to, it is a privilege and a pleasure to be there and we will look forward to the games and we will enjoy the whole occasion. We will do what we are good at and continue to do that but at the same time we have got players who have played in the games, we have got experienced players who have played international football and have played in a lot of big matches. Together we will go in with the belief that we can win the games and they can take us forward.

I have let David Kelly and Julian Darby join in with the training and they have had a nightmare, I sucking throat lozenges because my voice has gone shouting at them two. But the game was a good laugh I can tell you, we had a good seven-a-side game and we let the staff join in, I won’t even mention Balderston’s performance, that’s not even worth talking about!

I think the pressure comes at the opposite end of the table when you are fighting to try and stay in the league and you are fighting for safety. We are at a different scale, we have a pressure that is a joy, it’s a joy to be involved in the play-offs, it’s a joy to have the opportunity to have two or three games which could possibly take us into the Premiership, that’s a wonderful pressure.

Obviously the loss of two players is concerning, Callum Davidson and Eddie Lewis are two quality players, they give us great balance. But there are many permutations we can put out there, with regards pushing McKenna or bringing in Marlon Broomes and pushing Hilly forward, changing the 4-4-2 system, there are lots of different things we can do and we are looking at that at the moment. There is no point us crying over spilt milk we have to get on with it. We have lost two important players and that gives great opportunity for other players to come into the side and no matter what changes have been made, we have got to continue to do what we have been doing which is preparing right and trying to win games of football.

Every day I contact him and every second day I speak to him, I was out for dinner with him last week and the miserable so-and-so never bought the meal. But we speak a lot through texts and phone-calls and he was one of the first to congratulate us and I am delighted about that. We are great friends not only on the field but also off the pitch, we were great workmates and I am delighted for the education he gave me and the opportunity he gave me in English football and he knows that very much and that is something that I will never forget.

Two defeats in twenty and looking forward to a play-off place or games in the play-offs. Thee mood is bright and bubbly and we are pleased that we are the only side guaranteed a play-off place at the moment with many other good sides fighting to get there. It is a nice dressing room at the moment but we won’t get carried away, we know the situation, it’s still to be played for, we know what’s got to be done. These are a great bunch of players and they know exactly what is required.
